Scholarship Fund

Replenishing the Penncrest Class of 1980 Scholarship Fund

The Penncrest Class of 1980 Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 using the left over funds from our 30th class reunion. In May 2011, we awarded $1000 to senior Ben Davis, as "a student who has shown the most academic progress over the four years of high school and intends to pursue a four-year degree."  While we did not know it at the time of deciding the winner, it turned out that Ben was the son of one of our very own Penncrest 1980 classmates, Chris Davis.  I went to the awards ceremony last year and awarded the scholarship on your behalf.

This year we would like to raise another $1000 for a scholarship.  If only 20 people contributed $50 each we would reach our goal.  You remember how difficult it was to start out going to college, having enough money just to buy books can be daunting.  Giving a small scholarship like we did last year to a deserving student who did not get any other awards helps him (or her) prepare for college.

If you would like to contribute to this year's scholarship, below are instructions on how to donate.

Those who contribute get to decide what the scholarship is given for (if we decide to change the criterion from last year's award). The Penncrest Guidance Department makes nominations, and then we the contributors vote on who gets the award.  So please help us this year with a donation.

Any amount is welcome.  I, myself, am donating $50 in honor of my upcoming 50th birthday!  Contributions are due by the end of March, so we have time to coordinate with the Penncrest Guidance Department.

Thanks again for your help with this.

The schedule for making the award is:

From now until March 30 - collect donations and discuss any issues.
March 30 - last chance to contribute
April 1 - By now, we have decided what the award is going to be for.  Last year we decided it was going to be for the "student who has shown the most academic progress over the four years of high school and intends to pursue a four-year degree".  We are not required to give the award based on this criterion this year, so any ideas for another criterion are welcome.
April 1 - we submit our final decision on what the award is for to Dave Harple, the Guidance Counselor at Penncrest.
May 1 - Dave Harple provides us a slate of 3-5 possible choices and we vote on the winner
May 7- We inform Dave Harple of our choice.
Jun 1 (roughly) - The award is presented at the Penncrest Awards ceremony.
